GODLIMAN: (As Pearl) Which part of me are you comparing to a wooden boat? Do you even remember what a penis looks like? You know what happens to a wooden boat when it's been out of the water too long? GODLIMAN: (As Pearl) Well, I'm a bit more quality conscious than you.īARBER: (As Dolly) Quantity's more my thing. KERRY GODLIMAN: (As Pearl Nolan) Yeah, well, not today.īARBER: (As Dolly) Have you considered that this might be the perfect opportunity for you to live a little, to fill the inevitable void with something new, someone even? When was the last time you went on a date? (SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "WHITSTABLE PEARL")įRANCES BARBER: (As Dolly) Charlie showed me the prospectus for his university. Here, as the two work in the kitchen, she notes that Pearl's son Charlie will soon be heading off to university. But seasoned viewers can tell that two things are going to happen - Pearl will turn out to be a sharp detective, and the two are destined to become close, maybe romantically. Played with taciturn charisma by Howard Charles, McGuire initially mocks Pearl's gumshoe aspirations. Pearl's work keeps her stumbling across a newcomer to Whitstable, Mike McGuire, a Black cop who's transferred down from London after the death of the wife he adored. Invariably, these problems end up with a corpse or two lying around. Pearl also has a small detective agency where locals come to get help with their problems - you know, a missing spouse or trash cans that keep getting moved. Kerry Godliman stars as Pearl, a single mom who runs a seafood restaurant, The Whitstable Pearl, along with her widowed mother, Dolly, played by Frances Barber. I whooshed through the preview episodes of "Whitstable Pearl," a new series on Acorn TV, the Anglo-centric streaming service that clearly aims to have a show set in every picturesque town in the British Isles, including the imaginary ones.īased on a set of novels by Julie Wassmer, "Whitstable Pearl" takes place in, yes, Whitstable, a touristy seaside city that, to judge from the show, has a murder rate to rival Medellin in its drug cartel heyday. Everyone has their own favorite kind of go-to shows, mine are crime dramas, especially the British models. We're looking for something to ease into, a show that doesn't have challenging themes but does have characters we enjoy being with. JOHN POWERS, BYLINE: When we talk about television nowadays, we tend to measure new programs against stellar ones, like "Fleabag" or "Watchmen" or "The Crown." Yet when we turn on the TV at the end of a hard day, we don't need or necessarily even want a show that's a peak experience. Our critic-at-large John Powers says the show's themes are familiar but no less appealing for that. The show, whose first two episodes start streaming today on ACORN TV, follows the adventures of its heroine, a local restaurant owner who helps the police solve murders. The new British mystery series "Whitstable Pearl" is set in a small city on the English coast. wbo, a file format that Webots store robot information. Hence, in order to control the dynamics of the robot manipulator, inverse dynamics and a fuzzy PD controller optimized via particle swarm optimization are used in this research study. Furthermore, the Lagrange method is utilized to obtain the dynamic equations of motion. The Denavit-Hartenberg approach and the Jacobi method for each of the arms of the robot are employed in order to gain the kinematic equations. It is also demonstrated that sensory feedback could potentially play a significant role in the generation of standing waves during walking.Ĭyberbotics Ltd. Results show that configurations which com- bine global couplings from limb oscillators to body oscilla- tors, as well as inter-limb couplings between fore- and hind- limbs come closest to salamander locomotion data. We were in particular inter- ested in (1) the ability of the controller to produce a travel- ing wave along the body for swimming and a standing wave for walking, and (2) the role of sensory feedback in shaping the patterns. Since the exact organization of the salaman- der's locomotor circuits is currently unknown, we used the numerical simulations to investigate which type of coupled- oscillator configurations could best reproduce some key as- pects of salamander locomotion. Using nu- merical simulations of both the controller and of the body, we investigated different systems of coupled oscillators that can produce the typical swimming and walking gaits of the salamander. This article presents a model of the salamander's loco- motion controller based on nonlinear oscillators. For all the movie’s display of the grand romantic gesture in the face of imminent disaster, its filming rarely feels immediate it gives the sense of a staging before the camera rather than an invention in its presence. The sequence is as plain in its pathos as it is effervescent in its comedy it darkens the pursuit of pleasure with the shadow of tragedy, and culminates in the cautionary wisdom of steering clear of the mighty and the entitled.Īt first, I suspected that Almodóvar was so invested in the movie’s ideas that he didn’t have much energy left-or didn’t feel the need to devote much-to the filming. He does so in the film’s most startling and beautiful sequence, set in Madrid, that is built from a telephone conversation between the famous actor and his deceived wife, who is in a desperate situation that’s too juicy to spoil, and that results in an amazing coincidence that makes for one of the most inspired movie moments of the year. European countries still tend to leave the private lives of public figures out of the equation (and out of the news), and this may be why Almodóvar-even as he emphasizes the lusty lives and privileged pleasures of high-flying potentates-also calls attention to the trails of victims they leave behind on the ground. Sex is no longer a perquisite of political power in the United States here, high office is now principally the domain of the faithfully monogamous. It’s apt to be talking about “I’m So Excited!” just as New York City’s 2013 elections are heating up with the scandal-tarred candidacies of Anthony Weiner for mayor and Eliot Spitzer for comptroller. In linking sex and wealth, it’s as if Almodóvar were reversing cause and effect-suggesting that the spirit of excess is also the spirit of enterprise, that the drives for pleasure, success, and power are bound together inextricably. The three stewards aren’t themselves rich or mighty, but they’re the crucial and constant supporting cast of the scene of power. His wide-eyed hedonistic cynicism is sublime, as in the depiction of prostitution as a crucial and unquestioned service to powerful and wealthy men in the personal fulfillment that the dominatrix finds in her plan-B profession in the irony of a boondoggle airport, made through the shady machinations of a dubious financier, that offers the only venue for the anticipated crash landing in the ubiquity of alcohol and drugs and the far greater evil arising from their repression.Ībove all, by way of his portrayal of the three male flight attendants, with their flapping wrists and theatrical mannerisms, Almodóvar asserts that there is such a thing as gay culture, an aesthetic that arises from (but isn’t reducible to) homosexuality-and that this culture is both absolutely central to our idea of culture as such and a universal solvent of sexual liberation (and, therefore, of liberation as such). The setup of economy-class passengers who sleep while the business class carouses suggests that sex is a crucial luxury, one of the major perks of money and power. And when word of the airplane’s troubles spills out to the business-class passengers-including a big-time dominatrix to the high and mighty, a shady banker, a mysterious security agent, a virgin clairvoyant, and a famous actor-the proximity of death (plus a drug-laced cocktail) acts like a truth serum, unleashing a torrent of desires and secrets.Īlmodóvar clearly has a lot on his mind, and he yields it up with clarity and vigor. To start, the fun takes place in the front of the plane-the cockpit and business class-because the coach passengers have been put to sleep for their own comfort. The film’s rich symbolism and ribald comic vitality is centered on a trio of flight attendants, gay men whose flamboyance contrasts with the strait-laced (and straight-laced) behavior of the closeted pilot and co-pilot, with whom two of them are having affairs. GED Test Subjectsįor the mathematical reasoning test, you are asked questions on basic math, geometry, basic algebra and graphs and functions. When a candidate passes the GED, she is deemed to have the academic skills equal to that of a high school graduate and receives a state high school diploma issued by the state, province or territory in which she resides. In order to pass, the candidate must meet or surpass the performance of the top 60 percent of high school graduates. The GED tests several skills, including communication, problem solving, information processing and critical thinking. The tests are available in English, Spanish, French, large print, Braille and audio format. It consists of several tests over four subject areas: mathematical reasoning, science, social studies and reasoning through language arts. The GED is jointly administered by the GED Testing Service of the American Council on Education and each participating state's department of education. There are two other eligibility requirements: You must not be currently enrolled in a regular high school, and you must be 16 years of age or older. In fact, you can only take the GED tests if you do not have a high school diploma. The GED Testing Service, which is provided by the American Council on Education and Pearson, an education publishing and assessment service, is designed for those who didn't finish high school. Esperanza is creative and intelligent, with dreams of becoming a writer, but her world presents only two options for women: La Virgen de Guadalupe and La Chingada (also known as La Malinche). The area is deeply impoverished and, as Esperanza grows up, she realises that she can't live there forever. The House On Mango Street follows the story of Esperanza's life as a Chicana in a Hispanic area in the U.S. I guess House On Mango Street could be considered a modern re-telling of the 1920s classic in some ways. Within A Room Of One's Own, Woolf penned the famous line "a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction," and many elements of Cisernos' story revolve around this sentiment. The title of Cisernos' novella is a nod to Virignia Woolf's A Room Of One's Own, and there are references to this work throughout. "A las Mujeres - To the women" the House On Mango Street dedication reads, as author Sandra Cisernos simultaneously acknowledges the bilingual - or, in other words, Spanglish - nature of the story she's about to tell, and the intention she has of creating a female space in a male-dominated world. The novella serves to represent and make a space for an underrepresented group in society. It's a feminist tale of a young Chicana (a woman of Mexican origin) named Esperanza, who tells her story through a series of vignettes as she grapples with her Mexican American identity and her feminism. For many people, The House On Mango Street does exactly that. Whether it is seeing yourself through a fictional character in a novel or TV show, or finding a community of people like you, feeling represented in the way that you want to is everything. Tickets may be purchased at the theater before the show.I've said it before and I'll say it again: representation is crucial. Tickets are $14 for general admission, $12 for UTEP faculty/staff and military and $9 for UTEP students. 1 and 2, with show times at 7:30 p.m., with the exception of Sept. “The House on Mango Street” have performances on Sept. “It opened my eyes to my potential as well as gave me insight on life situations I have not really thought about.” “I have loved this book for a really long time,” Rivas said. The main objective of the play for Rivas is allowing the audience to use their imagination, as if they were reading the novel and imagining life in Chicago in the ‘60s. “To take pride in their culture as well as a reflection of culture, not only Latino, but growing up as a young girl dealing with various adolescent issues.” “I hope that (the audience) react the way the readers have,” said Rivas. In preparation for the play, the cast practically memorized the novel so the audience can get the narrative form as well as the true dialogue of what is taking place in each scene. “The House on Mango Street is relatable to the El Paso community,” Dominguez said. Since the novel is based on a young Latina girl, this play may give insight to what young girls deal with in their own community.Īdriana Dominguez, audience director for the theater department, said that the production of “The House on Mango Street” will be a great play that is brought to life by reenacting the novel. Her writing detaches her from the neighborhood and her family, which may take her out of her neighborhood for good.Įsperanza experiences a series of changes, mentally and sexually, when she and her friends start to roam the Chicago streets at night in high-heeled shoes. The play follows Esperanza, a young girl who is clueless about sex and her own sexuality, but is eager to learn about it from people such as her friend Marin.Įsperanza uses writing as a tool to escape from the reality of experiencing a sexual assault and her life on Mango Street. The play explores topics such as sexual experiences, abuse, poverty and mental toughness. The play is an adaptation of Sandra’s Cisneros’ book by Amy Ludwig, and both Rivas and Ludwig want to bring life to the novel that demonstrates what girls face during adolescence. The UTEP Theatre and Dance Department will present “The House on Mango Street,” directed by Rebecca Rivas, at the Wise Family Theatre in the Fox Fine Arts Center beginning on Sept. I discovered an alternative to mixing mortar and applying it with a trowel: Quikcrete concrete bonding adhesive, which works for above-grade applications. Decades ago, I’d done enough repair work on a brick wall to know that I was lousy at masonry. I didn’t use rebar in case the wall later had to be demolished for some reason. Most modern concrete blocks have a notch for inserting reinforcing steel bar (rebar). Another good option is using 4-by-8-by-16-inch solid blocks. Opting for 6-by-8-by-16-inch, hollow, heavy-wall block, I paid about $0.75 a piece at the time. You can keep valuables like food, firearms and ammunition in it. On the whole, you’re better off having a room that’s too large than one too small. It would accommodate three or four people in a pinch. I used masking tape to lay out the space for building my family’s safe room. If your basement has an area bordered by three walls, all you need to do is build the fourth and add a door. Unless you live in a log or stone home, you’ll need a basement stronghold to keep family and friends secure.Ī basement corner is particularly advantageous for building a safe room because two walls are already in place. The most secure (and least expensive) safe rooms take advantage of existing basement walls, which usually are poured-in-place, reinforced concrete. When the stock market took a nosedive in the fall of 2008, I decided it was time to build a safe room for my family in case of civil unrest. Several companies build safe rooms ranging from modest and simple to large and lavish. If you travel on business, consider adding a safe room for the times when you can’t be there to defend your loved ones. Safe rooms can protect your family and friends from severe weather and a determined attack from those using hand tools or small-arms fire. |
